Jasmina Cibic. Most Favoured Nation
Mönchsberg
In her multimedia creations, artist and filmmaker Jasmina Cibic (Ljubljana, SI, 1979) explores the intertwinements of state power, culture, and gender constructs. She examines the mechanisms of soft power — the instrumentalization of culture by political forces — during moments of historical social and ideological crises.
For her first solo exhibition in an Austrian museum, Cibic has developed a spatial architecture in the tradition of the European salon. She inhabits its entirety with a selection of historical references, which all merge in one single act: they are all examples of how culture was used to promote political directions of (trans)national identity. Equally, the artist looks at the current situation of the European community of states to examine the validity of the “European idea,” which is based on common values and ideals.
A publication, which can be purchased at our online-shop, was accompanying the exhibition. The publication is supported by SKICA - Slovenian Cultural and Information Centre.
